First stop was to try one of the local brews - Sangria. Quite good and nice and refreshing as it was getting in the low to mid 30's by this stage. First day BEACH! It is amazing how much you miss it after 6 months without it. Even though we were on the Mediterranean it was bloody cold compared to QLD. We were a little disappointed with Albefera where our hotel was - very touristy and culture/language was like being in England, minus the weather. You wouldn't believe how many places offered a hot English breakfast:) Checked out a beautiful old town not to far away and ended up in Faro which had a very nice center. Most people say that Faro is just their for the airport, but actually it was a really nice place to visit with a lot of life. After a minor issue for our waiter - service was good, food was prompt, but after 3 tries and about an hour he still wouldn't bring us the bill we found a little festival in the old town square. Seafood, music, dancing gave us the full Portuguese experience. Day 3 we headed West to the most South west corner of Europe. We even found the Atlantic! Our little Suzuki was a beauty, but had one minor problem. It didn't come with a Roof. The aridness of the area gave us comfort that a roof should not be necessary, although it actually did start raining a little on this day. The beach above was from a tiny little beachside town called Burgau. Very nice genuine little town with great old architecture on a tranquil little beach. On the right is a photo of the view out of the hotel. And yes, that is a bloody Irish pub in the background! The English in Portugal is a lot better than my German, however they also make mistakes (left). Deb bought a new hat and thought It didn't suit me, but I disagreed (centre) and 35 degrees sun shining in Portugal, less than 3 hours later this is what we arrived back to in England:) |
